D'inspiration autobiographique, ce récit relate la vie d'une famille en Indochine durant les années 1930. Suzanne, une adolescente, vit avec sa mère et son frère Joseph. La mère, abattue par la vie, a cherché à cultiver une concession chaque année envahie par le Pacifique, en vain. Celle-ci n'a qu'un seule désir : marier sa fille à M. Jo, un homme riche pour reconstruire un barrage.
